Here we had a lovely chat to one of our regular members who actively attends Claremorris Leisure Centre. Paul is delighted to share his story with us and what Claremorris Leisure Centre means to him and his lifestyle.

Q1: What first attracted you to join Claremorris Leisure Centre?
Q2: How long have you been coming to Claremorris Leisure Centre and what kind of training or classes do you usually do?
I first joined Claremorris Leisure Centre 8 years ago in September 2017.
My favourite type of training and classes would be, cardio and also weight training which would include the Spinning classes, the Wednesday and Friday Active Fitness classes at 11am, are great for strength training and full body movements.
Q3: What motivated you to stay active and train regularly at the centre?
I am very passionate about my physical health and fitness all my life. I believe that training, keeping fit and having a daily routine of having fitness apart of your daily life is the key to a healthy life.
When I first joined the leisure centre, I could not get over how friendly, helpful and professional all the staff were. It was really a open and friendly atmosphere every time I stepped foot into the place.
Q4: What is your favourite amenities / services here in Claremorris Leisure Centre?
The fitness classes here available in the leisure centre is absolutely fantastic. The Wednesday and Friday Active Fitness class at 11am is one of a kind, I would certainly recommend it to anyone. My other favourite fitness class I love attending each week is the spinning class and the Box & Tone class. Very professional and a great way to get into fitness while feeling a sense of a team and community while working out.
Q5: How did regular fitness contribute to your everyday life before your recent illness?
From a young age, I’ve integrated fitness into my daily routine.
I always had a sense of feeling younger and healthier than my actual age.
Unfortunately, I had a medical issue in recent month’s where I had a stroke, and it took me by surprise when it happened. I was lucky in one sense that my recovery was quick and I got back to myself quicker than I expected. I was told by medical staff that my recovery had been so surprising to see, that by being so fit and training regularly, it had a massive part to play in my recovery process.
Q6: Did you ever think about returning to the leisure centre while you were still in recovery, and did that goal help motivate you?
Yes, 100%. I was in the hospital recovering for two full months. I found it very tough and lonely while I was in the hospital and recovering at the time. When I was in there, everyday I always told myself once I recover and back to myself again, I will be straight back into what really saved my life, keeping fit and training on a weekly basis. I missed the social side of not seeing everyone that I used to see in the fitness classes at the
leisure centre and friends that I had made from being apart of this community. One final note on this, I really do appreciate you all from the leisure centre, when I was in the hospital just after my stroke, you guys always checked in on me and gave me a call over the phone on more than one occasion. This might seem a small thing to a lot of people, but, when I was in there, that meant the world to me and I will never forget it.
Q7: Have you returned to training since your recovery, and what has that journey been like?
Yes, thankfully I feel I’m fully back to myself again and training well these days. I’m back to what I love best, attending my weekly fitness classes here in the leisure centre and I’m also on my bike on the roads every day as well. It was a tough process to get back to this point but I am grateful to be back training again.
Having a routine and a balance, for me, is one of the most important things in my daily life. This is what I love by the going to the fitness classes, your booked in and you have your routine there each day and you know that this one hour of the day is my time for myself which I prioritise. I feel good and positive both physically and mentally after every time I have this routine set.
Q8: What roles does the leisure centre play in your life now both physically and mentally?
Yes it is important to train, keep fit and workout each week for feeling good physically, but, I think feeling mentally good and having a positive impact on my mental health is just as important. This for me is what I get from coming to the leisure centre. The welcome I get from every single one of the staff here on a weekly basis when I come to train, how kind and helpful the staff are and also how professional the instructors are in every class I attend, it’s up there with the best. I feel with some places I have been previously, the anxiety I get especially walking in to the entrance is very full on or sometimes you would get ignored or don’t feel you are in the right place there to go and train or whatever it is.
Coming to the leisure centre here, is like being around family and
friends who are always there with a warm welcome and a smile even when you don’t feel like working out on that particular day. I can’t praise the staff and management enough, we are all lucky enough to have this fine facility in our local town and area.
Q9: What message would you give to someone who might be hesitant about starting their fitness journey?
I would say, don’t over think it, give it a try, there is something here in this building for everyone. As I have expressed to you already for my love of the fitness classes and the gym, even though there is a fantastic swimming pool and spa area downstairs, that for me isn’t my thing, but my point is, there is so much options for people to pick from here.
Doesn’t matter if you are into team sports, individual training, swimming, running, gym, aqua aerobics or even just to sit down and chill out after the day, you can with the sauna, steam room or jacuzzi that is downstairs available to everyone as well. So my point is give it a go, try all the different options out and see is there one or two or if any option is for you and maybe you will enjoy doing it.
Q10: If you had to sum up your experience here at Claremorris Leisure Centre, what would it be?
I would say it is a place where you can go and it doesn’t matter if you are a young baby just a few month’s old, right up to what ever age you want it to be, there is no limit. It is a community and a facility that offers so much choice for whatever age you are in life and it is never too late to start. Since I have joined here, it has brought so much joy and pleasure to be apart of this wonderful community and facility here in Claremorris.
I couldn’t recommend the leisure centre enough to anyone.
